Dear NABSW Family: We are deeply saddened to receive the news of the passing of our brother and comrade in the struggle, Dr. Fred Smith. Fred was an original! Brilliant, witty, sincere and dedicated, Fred never hesitated to voice his opinion on the rights and wrongs of brothers and sisters, community, society and the organization. Decade after decade when we traveled to the Steering Committee meetings and to the National Conference we could always depend on Fred being there. If he wasn't on the floor articulating his position on one of many passionate issues, he was out in the community relieving his stress by running. Fred was a great friend and supporter. He didn't wavier in the face of opposition. He talked mucho...but then that was Fred. His presence will be missed, but his spirit will remain with us. Let's take comfort in knowing that Fred now rests peacefully in the arms of our ancestors. Love and peace, Pat and Bill Merritt

Melissa, My condolences go out to you and your loved ones during this time of grief. Your father was a special man and I will miss how he made me feel special, just being in his presence. May you take comfort in looking back at the good times to comfort you in the days ahead. Angela W

Melissa, I made a comment yesterday but wanted to add that Fred was one of the earliest persons to talk about energy focusing on that years ago. Also he and I attended AUSSW (not at the same time) but that didn't matter. I have a deep appreciation of Atlanta University SSW and so did Fred. RAuth Vaughn
